Hey, I’m Liesel Hill!
Before I had 20 books, a USA Today bestseller, or a single student… I had stories that just weren't working.
As a kid, fictional worlds, characters, and stories were my safe space. My best friends. The escape I retreated to when real life felt hard.
I knew from a very young age that I wanted to create those worlds for others. To connect with readers through story.
But when I first started writing, I didn’t know how to use my words to help readers feel the emotion of my stories. I couldn't tell what wasn't working, how to make what read as flat come to life. And I didn’t have confidence in my own writing.
Then I went to the League of Utah Writers spring conference. Dystopian Author Dan Wells did a presentation on plot points. For the first time, I understood that story has a specific structure and that if authors adhere to it, it becomes a cheat code for hooking readers.
That put me on a journey of twenty years of studying story craft and learning the truth behind how to write emotional fiction that readers actually respond to.
It changed the way I wrote my own fiction and lead to me becoming a USA Today Best-Selling Fiction Author and writing 20 books across four different genres.
Now, plenty of writing teachers will tell you STRUCTURE is the secret.
That you should read more craft books to understand plot and structure better in order to become a better writer.

And listen, they aren't wrong. Understanding the true structure of plot (it’s not what you think it is, or what is commonly taught) can be LIFE CHANGING for a writer.
But here's what I learned next, and it changed everything:
Structure gets your story standing. EMOTION is what makes readers unable to put it down.
As a writer myself, I use to always think to myself that I wanted my stories to be EPIC. The stories I love are so epic. How do I make my own fiction like that?
(Epic was just the word I used in my own head, and not the best one for what I was trying to describe to myself.)
Then, one day, as I sat at my computer, what I was ACTUALLY trying to tell myself hit me like a Brand Sanderson hardcover book to the face.
EMOTION.
Emotion is why we love stories. It’s why we read novels. It’s why we get excited about them, become obsessed with them, gush about them, and read them over and over again.
Emotion is why the book industry is even a thing.
And in my stories, the plot was solid. Every beat landed right where it should. And the reader felt… nothing.
Because I wasn’t being intentional about putting emotion into my stories.
And that changed everything for me. Plot beats aren’t bad by any means. In fact, they’re an essential part of the code that you don’t want to leave out.
But even my excitement over plot twists was, at its core, about the emotion the plot twists created for me.
And I wondered if there was a way I could figure out exactly what emotion I wanted the reader to feel in each scene, and then intentionally create that emotion on the page for them?
SPOILER ALERT: There is and you can!
Meaning: A story can hit every plot point and still leave readers cold.
Meaning: Readers forget what happened. They never forget how you made them feel.
Meaning: When you build the emotion first, the structure finally has something to carry.
So I made emotion the center of how I write, and how I teach.

Beat sheets and formulas can be fun! But they give you details. They don’t tell you how to finish an unputdownable novel.
Plot templates (The Hero’s Journey, the Virgin’s Promise, etc) are super valuable, but they tell you where things happen, not why a reader will care (or how to make them care).
Editors and critique groups can be very helpful! But you pay per manuscript, and "the middle drags" doesn't give you the exact, step by step process for how to fix it.

My Final Parting Words to You…
“Have You Met Ida?”
Ida joined my Emotional Storytellers Intensive roster, and her story stuck with me.
Ida is a crime fiction author. She had already self-published four books. (Three were "learning projects," and the fourth did really well!)
So she wasn't a beginner. She had a finished rough draft of her latest novel, and she was pretty happy with the plot.
Then she sent it to her beta readers.
And they told her the book needed work. The problem wasn't the plot. It was the characters.
Her heroine was coming across a little... snotty. (Not at all what Ida wanted!) Her detective didn't talk or act the way a real detective would. And her villains didn't feel like real people.
Ida had an editing program, but it couldn't fix the issues. It could clean up sentences. It couldn't tell her how to develop a character or give her a voice.
So she did what so many writers do when they don't know where to begin.
She put the book on the back burner.
And she had another problem, one I hear ALL the time. With every book she wrote, she came at it from a different angle. She felt like she was reinventing the wheel every single time.
She wanted a process that was repeatable and complete.
And she had tried planning before. But she'd get bored, ditch the plan, and start writing anyway. (She called it "pantsing," as in flying by the seat of your pants. I think "plantsing" is the official term!)
Then she joined the Emotional Storytellers Intensive (now the core curriculum you get inside the Forge).
And things started to click. Over and over.
First, it was the journaling questions. She dug into her main character's struggles, and suddenly she could see how to bring them out on the page.
Then came the villains. Journaling on who they were, why they were doing what they were doing, and HOW they were doing it helped her flesh them out until they felt like real people.
Then came the moment that blew her mind. I had the group try a character-interaction exercise with ChatGPT, and Ida admits she'd been avoiding it "like the plague." She described her heroine and her detective, and asked how those two personalities would actually interact.
What came back showed her exactly what was missing from her book.
Then there were the two concepts she had heard people throw around for years but never really understood: the internal arc and the plot points. She learned how to take her characters and their arcs and meld them into the plot.
Her words: "That was just like, wow, that's really cool."
And I want to be clear about something, because a lot of writers worry about this.
The Intensive didn't tell Ida what to write.
She got direction WITH freedom. Instead of "do this," it was "how does this character respond to that?" and "what's this character's history?" The ideas were all hers.
Here's where Ida is now.
She went from a vague idea for book two to a strong premise and a detailed outline.
She's already planning to go back and revise book one, because she now has the tools to deepen it. She's learned what readers of her genre expect from the story and its characters. (She says she was completely clueless about that before!)
Ida told me she can now sit down and plot out an entire novel. And she knows that once she starts writing, it's going to be FUN. Especially now that she can give her characters their own voices and let them banter.
And when I asked what she'd tell her past self about joining?
